My mother in law is a great cook. She cooks classic French simple home dishes. Sometimes she cooks something very creative with her artistic nature. Most surprisingly she always cooks for lunch and dinner, twice a day. It's really the best to eat at home in France, for the price, the taste and for them health-wise as well.
From my observations, french people don't go out to eat at the restaurant as much as Asian. "Dinning out" is usually the culture of the cities anywhere in the world but still people don't eat out very often. I think that is because of the price. Even at Brasserie, it ends up about 15 euro plus. One the other hand, it's very easy and reasonable to eat out in Japan and other Asian countries.
In France, especially in the countryside, you always have to cook. There are huge supermarkets with millions of fresh products in small cities, so you can find anything, except for some specific international foods. I was very surprised by the size and the number of foods in these supermarkets! It really was the biggest food store I've ever seen! For the quality and the variety, even the ones in the U.S. is not comparable.
