February Japanese home dishes - vegetables

 

For some reason, in Kumamoto, which is the number one producer of Tomatoes in Japan, the best season of tomatoes is the winter.  We have tons of red and ripped tomatoes this season.  Also, we start to have newly made onions and potatoes.  They're so fresh and sweet and I love to cook together as "Nikujaga".

「２月の野菜料理」この頃は蕪や大根をよく食べた。１月２月はトマトの季節でもある。熊本はトマトの生産量全国1位だが、冬がトマトのシーズンなのだ。塩トマトなどのブランドトマトはこの時期に出る。

新じゃがと新玉ねぎが出始めたので、サラダにしたり肉じゃがにしたり。新玉ねぎとトマトのサラダはフレンチドレッシングをかけると簡単で最高に美味しい。

February is usually the coldest month in Kumamoto.  It was actually very cold most of the month.  Yet this year due to covid restriction for the restaurants, we hardly have good fish available.

「２月の刺身」２月は熊本では一年で一番寒い月。今年は割と寒かったと思う。日中の最高気温が６度、最低が１度などの日々がかなりあったように思う。

寒すぎる冬にはあまり良い魚が出ないのだが、今年はそうではなく蔓延防止のため。良い魚を出す店、寿司屋などが休みなので市場に良いものが出なくなってしまった。今仕入れる人はスーパの鮮魚部しかいないそうだ。最近美味しいのは玄界灘の「ヨコワ」。脂ののりが良くてとても美味しい。

Hatsuuma

 

Hatsuuma is a festival held at the Shinto shrine for the prosperity of business.  Many people who own their own businesses come to pray for the good year on this day, 10th February for this year.  Unfortunately, visitors were not as many as in the past year due to a covid outbreak in the region.

「初午」今年は２月１０日が初午で少しだけお手伝いへ行ってきた。蔓延防止中なので夜の参拝もあまり無かったそうだ。今年の商売繁盛をお祈り。

These pots of plants I bought this year at the fare, they all look very pretty on the basket.  They cost about $10 for three but some of them can live very long.

「バスケット寄せ植え」３つで１０００円の寄せ植え用の植物はバスケットに入れて階段側の窓側に置いている。毎年こんなふうに買ってみる。長生きするのは限られているが、どれが成長できるのか観察するのも楽しみ。

Trees & Plants festival 2022

 

Every year in February, we have this festival along the Shirakawa riverside.  I love coming to this fare and I've been coming to this a few times already this year.

「植木市２０２２」白川沿いの植木市。いつも楽しみにしているイベントだ。家の庭木や室内用の寄せ植えなど楽しめる植木が沢山ある。そんな中今年の収穫は骨董品。いい店を見つけたので、２月から通っている。

January Bento with Sensei

I like to set my lunch in Oju box in January becaue it's the sineture of new year in Japan.  For the first time I made the bento box one with French food.  I love it.  I don't know why I havne't don it before.

今回は初めて１段フレンチ弁当にしてみた。これが本当に良かった。和食も美味しいけれど、少しフレンチが入った方がワインにも合うし、食べ応えがある。なぜ今までしていなかったのか自分でも不思議だ。私はやっぱりフレンチの方が性に合っている。

Afternoon Tea - Cotswolds Tea Room

I'm very glad to announce that I'm serving cakes for a tea room since last December! Afternoon tea is three layers of cakes, waffles and sandwich plats served with two full teapots of teas.  I'm serving chocolate and cheesecakes on the first plat.

Chocolate cake is made with the notable luxurious French chocolate brand Valrhona.  Cheesecake is lemony and very refreshing.  t's absolutely delicious and I'm recommending it to everyone who lives in Kumamoto to have tea and taste my cakes! 

「コッツウォルズ・ティールームのアフタヌーンティー」

１２月末から始まったアフタヌーンティーのケーキを私が担当して出しています。

ケーキはフランス高級ショコラブランド使用のガトーショコラとさっぱりレモン味のレアチーズケーキ。もちろん私の自信作です！

その他コッツウォルズのお料理はサンドイッチやワッフルも丁寧な手作りでとても美味しいです。紅茶は添加物無し、香料無しの本当に紅茶の通だけが分かる逸品揃いです。その紅茶が２ティポット付きます。一つはダージリンなどのピュアなもの、その次はミルクティーなどのバリエーションティーがオススメです。

Setsubun

 

The seasonal celebration in February is "Setsubun" on February 3rd.  Though it's a festival for kids, we don't do anything particular but just have some beans.

「節分」九州には恵方巻きを食べる習慣が無いので、節分は大した事はしないが、売っていた豆セットを買ってみたら案外とても美味しかった。大豆をカラッと炒ったものはピーナツより美味しい。
